March 10, 2009 - Weekend Trip to DC

    Weekend Trip to DC

Over the weekend we went to a play called "
What So Proudly We Bailed". It is a satire political musical performed at the Burke Theatre inside the Naval Heritage Center at the Navy Memorial. The play was definitely different from anything that I had seen before - and especially different from the shows on Broadway. That being said, the all volunteer cast did a great job and kept us entertained during the show.

We took the Metro into DC from the New Carollton station about 20 minutes from my Dad's place in Annapolis. We got to DC around 4pm so we could walk around and see a few sites. Our dinner reservations were at 5pm at Old Ebbitts Grill - fortunately the restaurant was right next to the White House and a few other historic sites.

The weather was BEAUTIFUL - so we walked around as much as we could before dinner. Here is a picture of me & Jennifer in front of the White House. I think DC was a big deal for Jennifer because she had heard so much about it in school......and now she finally got to experience it! I think it was a big deal because Texas schools only teach Texas history and they throw in a little US history which mentions "DC monuments". So this may have been the only US history Jenn has heard about outside of Texas;-)
This sign was pretty cool. It showed a map of the grounds so you had an idea of where you stood in relation to all the monuments. The funny thing is that on the map, everything is only a couple inches apart..............but in real life the monuments are spread out pretty well!
There were three houses: red, blue and white. The one on the left was blue, the one on the right was red. Where is the white house? "Right behind me and my Dad!!!!"

    Dinner at
Old Ebbitts Grill was AWESOME! It has tons of history and lots of character! I guess if you read the history on the restaurant, it is the oldest, most historic saloon in DC. It was founded in 1856...........but there is a catch!!!! The legend begins with the innkeeper William Ebbitt buying a boarding house in 1856 - but he moved around a few times, so we were not in the original location. Either way, the food was great, the service was pretty good, and we had a great time! On a side note, Old Ebbitts Grill was one of the first places that Chrissy Goodwin went when she lived in DC........... and Randy Eastep loves the burgers there............that is for all my Merritt Island friends!
This is a great picture of the three of us in front of the Washington Monument! Again, it looked so close on the map, but it had to be at least 9 football fields away from the restaurant......up hill....in the snow! An interesting side note here is that the kids who took our picture were from Wheeling, WV. That is where Cousin Eugene and the other half of the Magnone family is from! They were in town to watch the Penguins beat the Capitols in Hockey the following day.

No blog entry is complete without a picture of Maddie & Dexter.......who have their own website coming out later this month. We interviewed Maddie after this picture and she said "we are very excited about the launch of our new website! We hope we can bring all of our dog friends together in one place with pictures, memories, and fun stories". When interviewed, Dexter said "I am excited about seeing myself on the web. I hope people use my pictures in calenders, photo frames, cards, and stuff like that so I can make some money......my dad taught me that! I also hope it helps me stay in touch with Doggie from Houston, Coors, Luna, Bailey, & Guinness from South Hampton NJ, and Riley, Maddie, Madison, Rocco, Spicer, and the rest of the NYC crew"

    Maddie's new sleeping spot.....
Dexter checking out the first version of his new website.....
Randy came down on Sunday to watch the Carolina vs Duke game. After the game we watched the Simpson's then headed over to Fado's Irish Pub for a beer.........I mean couple of waters.
Look out for maddieanddexter.com coming at the end of the month!
